When an M sedan makes sense

The M3 is the more grown-up seating M — four doors, space in the back, and still a sharp drivetrain. It fits when you want pace and you are still carrying guests or luggage. At Masons, people take it who want M character but do not want to deal with a coupé every time someone gets in. It is not a limousine. It is still a sharp car. It is a sharp car you can take to dinner as four without the rear seats being a punishment. Punishment is a coupé when the third person has a coat and a bag. Forgiveness is a door that opens without a negotiation on the pavement.

Against the M4 the question is body and use, not the badge. The coupé is about two people and a look. The sedan is about a weekend that has to carry more than the driver. Against the M5 the M3 feels lighter and less about representation. Against the M2 it is larger, surer on the motorway, harder work in a tight centre. If you do not know, tell us who sits in the car and where you are going. The Masons fleet lives those differences every week, not on paper. Paper will tell you they are all M. A Saturday in Prague will tell you which doors you actually needed at the hotel.

The M3 is not the first choice for a pure photograph in front of the castle — for that, people take a G63. Nor is it the best choice for a pure B-road day if the M2's size is what amuses you. It is the choice when you want to drive from Prague to the spa towns, take people with you, and still have M. Read the deposit and kilometres on the card. Power on paper warms nobody in a queue on the magistrála. Prep between rentals does. Prep between rentals and a calm roll-out of Prague will decide the weekend more than an M badge on the bonnet. The badge will still be there in the photograph. The mood of the first hour will still be in the car.

An M sedan in the city

In central Prague the width is felt, but less than in an M8 or a G63. Four doors help at the hotel and at the restaurant. The low sports seat still wants calm ramps. Cobbles and tracks: city pace. In sport mode the M3 can be needlessly loud where nobody will thank you — night Malá Strana, residential streets. Keep the sharpness for a B-road. In town, certainty and calm are worth more than a time at the lights. Lights in Prague are not a circuit. They are a conversation with trams, and the sedan that loses that conversation is the one that woke a street for no reason.

Parking is easier than in a wide SUV, harder than in an ordinary sedan. A guarded garage, a space with margin for the rear doors. Rear passengers will thank you if you do not make them step out into traffic. Evening Prague suits the M3 because it can be quiet when you want, and present when you roll onto the embankment. It is not a roadster. It is a car that will carry clothes, a bag, and still a bit of character on the way to the table. Character does not have to shout between the tram stops. It can wait for the water, where shouting is at least a view.

Always take live rates and availability from the card in the fleet. A blog does not carry the seasonal list. The M3 tempts a longer motorway stage because it is a sedan that can go. Count the kilometres. A half day in town plus dinner is a different account from a weekend south. Deal with fuel and the deposit before you roll out. Masons will prepare the car; you watch the limits that sit on the card in black and white. If the first hour falls into an underground garage and the peak, the M sedan loses its point before it has shown you a motorway. Show it the motorway. That is the sentence it was written for.

Routes that suit the sedan

Karlštejn for a half day works when you leave the car off the worst crush and walk to the castle. The M3 is not here to park on a postcard. It is here to leave Prague, warm the car, and come back without drama. The Brdy will give the sedan more driving joy than the centre. A decent pace, a clean line, no race with bikes. If you want a sharper compact, there is the M2. If you want this drive and still the rear seats, there is the M3. Rear seats are not a compromise on a B-road. They are how the people you brought still like you when the road gets interesting.

For a weekend, south Bohemia or the spa towns. Leave a buffer for traffic and fuel. The M3 is sure on the motorway, and still wide enough at the destination for a historic lane to be a bad idea. Park with sense. Spa towns will thank a quiet arrival. Krumlov will thank you for leaving the car outside the centre. Four doors make sense here: people, bags, a Sunday return without folding someone over a backrest. A coupé does that worse. Worse is not dramatic until it is raining and the person in the back has already been folded once today.

Evening town and the M3 fit when you do not want an open roof and you do want to arrive as four. Bridges, the embankment, a garage, a table. You do not need to collect kilometres. One clean stage is enough. If you also plan a motorway the next day, you have a car that will carry both. If you only plan photographs, choose a more present car. The M3 is a driver's car with extra doors, not decoration. Leave margin for the return and for four people wanting to get out in calm, not on the magistrála. Calm exits are part of the hire. They are also how you still look like the grown-up M you booked.

Booking with Masons

Pick the date in the fleet, or write via Contact. We arrange delivery across Prague case by case. We usually confirm quickly in business hours. The M3 is in demand because it solves more situations than a pure coupé. In season do not leave it to the last moment. Deposit, fuel and daily kilometres are on the car card. The review is about use, not a promise of price. Use is who sits where, and whether Sunday still looks like a drive. Price is a line that can move. We would rather you read the line than memorise a number we cannot honestly freeze in a magazine.

Write how many of you will go and where. We can say whether the M3, M4, M5, or something else entirely from the fleet is better. It is not a script. It is eight years of matching cars to people and to routes from Prague. Between rentals we prepare the car with the same procedure as the rest of the fleet: inspection, wheels, cabin. Do not let the weekend be eaten by a fight with a body you only wanted in a photograph. A wrongly chosen body is not fixed by sport mode. Sport mode will not add a door. It will only make the missing door louder.

You will see a free date on BMW M3 Competition in the Masons fleet. That is where rates and the deposit belong. Here is how the car lives in Prague and where to take it. When you have a date, start with the car card, not with the end of the review. The end of the review is a door, not a till. Walk through it to the card, and let the card do the work a paragraph must not do: the live number, the live window, the live yes or no for your weekend.
